Jerra Lynne and Dan

Today is wedding day for Jerra Lynne and Dan at the Skamania Lodge, located in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The weather promises to be interesting, but that’s Fall in the Northwest. Jerra Lynne wanted a Fall harvest theme for her wedding and the day will definitely deliver.

Since they live in California, their time in the Northwest to plan for their wedding was limited. I met them on the coldest day of 2006, in December for their engagement session along the Portland waterfront. I kept joking with Dan that he looked like Vin Diesel and had to keep up the tough guy image, no matter how cold it was that day. And by cold, I mean below freezing. You’d never know by the heat between these two how bitterly cold it was that day.

Today’s ceremony should be very interesting. A blend of Native American and Christian rituals with the Columbia River as the backdrop. The story will continue in a few weeks when I post their images after the wedding. Wherever you are today, take a moment to enjoy the crisp Fall weather. And send me some creative energy.

Wedding Day for Erin and Josh

You never know when or where love will find you. It’s a serendipitous mixture of fate. This was certainly true for Josh. Who knew that when he agreed to attend his niece’s parent teacher conference that he would later marry the woman he met that day?

Fast forward to wedding day for Erin and Josh, August 5th at McMenamin’s Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. It was a beautiful day. Erin kept Josh’s attention with her beautiful eyes and Josh kept flashing his enchanting smile (once the ceremony was over). Friends and family showed up to celebrate the day, including a few familiar faces. One of the groomsmen even performed with his band outside the octagonal barn.

Congratulations to the newly married couple and your families. Everyone was so happy that day celebrating the love between you. It was an honor being allowed into your lives on your wedding day. Best wishes for a lifetime of happiness! Here are a few of my favorite images from that day. And here is a link to their teaser slideshow…

Senior Photo Session with Elaine

As a senior in high school, your last year is one of transitions. Moving into adulthood and leaving behind your childhood. Having a professional photographer capture that exciting time in your life is what a senior session is all about. A touchstone of transition.

Since I don’t advertise senior sessions, it’s understandable that I don’t get a lot of calls to do them. When I do, it’s usually from seniors that are really trying to set themselves apart. They want a photographer that’s not using the same formula poses and locations that all their friends are having done. It’s important to them to capture this time in their life and for their unique personality to shine through.

When Elaine contacted me, she asked that I come up with an urban theme and feel for her pictures. After a number of conversations and location scouting, we decided on a location near downtown Portland, Oregon. I commissioned Sarah, my album designer, to create a few sample spreads for a senior album I’m putting together. These are a few of my favorite images and page designs from our session.

Because of the freedom and willingness of seniors to tackle any location and really immerse themselves into the experience, I must admit that these are quickly becoming one of my favorite things to do. They are a creative challenge and it’s every bit as important and singular an experience as a wedding and artistically very rewarding.

Congratulations Elaine! She will be focusing her creative energy into becoming an architect and I have a feeling that she will do very well. Stay tuned…

RSS in Plain English

A few months ago, I wrote an article called “Feeding the RSS”. Being able to subscribe to my favorite blogs has greatly reduced the amount of time I waste trying to keep up with all the fresh content being served up daily. I talk with people all the time who tell me they had no clue that I had new content on my blog. They forget to check back. First of all, what’s up with that? The beauty of RSS feeds and an RSS reader is that the content is brought to you as soon as it’s updated. You don’t have to remember to check! Once you get it set up (and it’s so simple even my father could do it) then you’ll wonder why you waited so long.

In case you are still apprehensive, watch this great video that explains RSS in plain English. It’s presented by the great folks over at Common Craft. Thanks guys! Now, watch this video and be sure to add my blog to your favorite flavor of RSS reader. All you have to do is click the little orange icon…c’mon…I dare you!

Slideshow for Katy and Dan

Congratulations once again to Katy and Dan who were married at the Columbia Gorge Hotel on August 4th. You can view your teaser slideshow here and log in to view all the pictures from your wedding. Be sure to pass it along to your family and friends because the gallery is finally ready to view! Wishing you both the very best in life, wherever that journey takes you.

BlogRush Widget

You’ll notice something new on my blog. It’s a widget called BlogRush. What is this and why should I care? Basically, it’s a traffic exchange. The goal is to reach more readers interested in what I’m writing and showing each week. The widget is cross referenced with other sites that have similar interests. When people click on the articles, it helps syndicate those articles through other sites that use the widget. It’s a way of reaching readers who may never find me and more importantly, it’s a fun way to discover a favorite new site.

I started this blog in 2005 when I redesigned my web site. My goal was to share stories and images from the weddings I photograph and other events that I think people would be interested in from the life of a professional photographer. It’s a way to stay connected with the wonderful people who hire me. The images are fresh and constantly changing and it shows my growth as an artist over a period of time. The more I can get readers to come here every week and visit, share comments and continue to have interest in my photography, the more people I can reach with my blog. But more importantly, it’s a way to show a growing body of work that doesn’t require a web site redesign every 6 months.

Most blog readers are bloggers themselves. If you’d like to join this collective of bloggers and help increase traffic to each other’s sites, then take a moment to sign up for yourself or send a friend to BlogRush. I have some ideas for the winter months that I hope you find interesting. I’m thinking of enlisting a group of photographers who will challenge each other to blog a picture a week. We may even attempt a picture a day. It would require a great deal of dedication, but what a great way to grow artistically. If you think this is a good idea or even a bad idea, leave a comment and let me know what you think. And since a blog post is worthless without in image (thanks Cory Anne) here is a random image from the archives.

The Wedding of Katy and Dan

When the Columbia Gorge Hotel was built in 1921, the world was a different place. The newly opened Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway was graced with this opulent “Waldorf of the West” and it quickly gained a reputation with Presidents and movie stars. This warm bluff overlooking the Columbia River is the setting Katy and Dan selected for their wedding day on August 2nd. There were at least 6 other couples celebrating anniversaries from 44 years to one year, then Katy and Dan who were newly inducted into the marriage club. Stepping into this hotel was like stepping back in time. You could almost hear the memories and laughter in the shadows.

The wedding day was interlaced with music. Katy is a music major and Dan is a research scientist in nano technology. Obviously, he pays attention to the small details and Katy sets the tone. The processional featured a song “Vows” written by Jeff Putterman, an accomplished jazz musician who was also Katy’s high school band director. The ceremony included a flute and violin performance and a reception showcasing the talents of their friends and family in musical toasts. One of the performances featured Alison Crossley who is a second round contestant on America’s Hot Musician.

One of the more exciting stories of the day was the forest fire that started up as we were photographing friends and family before the wedding. The clouds of smoke looked ominous and very close. The fire closed another wedding site across the highway and Katy and Dan offered to let the couple and their guests use the grounds of the hotel for their wedding. They also enjoyed an “Irish Car Bomb” (a potent mix of Bailey’s Irish creme and Bushmill’s Irish whiskey layered into a shot glass, then dropped into a pint of Guinness) with a group of their friends. I think Katy slammed hers down before Dan, but I could be wrong.

Congratulations to Katy and Dan and your families. The setting was perfect and it was a pleasure to share in your day surrounded by the warmth of family and friends and Irish Car Bombs. Best wishes for a lifetime of happiness, I’m sure we will hear a lot more from these two. But, for now, here is a piece they wrote for their guests.

“Thank you for sharing this day with us and please enjoy our astronomy themed chocolates. We met as officers in the Astronomy Club at Carnegie Mellon and we’ve shared many moments gazing at the sky (e.g. arguing about which constellatioin is which) and setting up telescopes (i.e. trying to get the telescope to track anything… the moon… the street lamp… anything…) We hope you take a few moments to look up tonight and enjoy what has been entrancing us for years.”

Blogging

I subscribe to a variety of blogs which I read through my NewsFire RSS reader. A southern California photographer wrote on their blog about being addicted to blogging. I decided to take the test. As much as you wish I would post more often (with more photographs), it’s safe to announce my addiction is under control. At least for now! Comments?

Ambassador for Change

At first glance, it may not seem like much, but if everyone tried to make one change in their life to help the environment then collectively we could change the world. It seems that I can’t pick up a newspaper, magazine or turn on the radio without hearing stories about those plastic bottles of water that we love so dearly. I see them at weddings every weekend. With three girls in the house, we go through cases of bottled water. I understand why—they are convenient and some may argue that it’s better than tap water. We all need to drink more water every day and it’s easier when you have a bottle on your desk.

This is what I did to make a small change and add a new accessory to my camera bag. I bought a Swiss engineered water bottle by SIGG. If you haven’t been to the web site, check it out. They are making it very easy to make a statement with your water bottle with lots of great designs and help the environment at the same time. So why should you consider making this change and becoming an ambassador for change?

Sigg Water Bottle

From a recent Newsweek article written by Karen Breslau:

Nothing irks Salt Lake city Mayor Ross (Rocky) Anderson more than seeing people tote water in plastic bottles. In fact, he argues, his city has some of the best tap water in the country. Several months ago, Anderson instructed department heads to stop buying bottle water for the city’s 2.200 workers and provide coolers and fountains instead. “For a long time, I’ve viewed [bottled water] as a huge marketing scam,” he says. Considering that Americans chug more than 30 billion single-serving bottles of water a year, Anderson’s campaign is at most a drop in the you-know-what. But there are signs of a push to bring back the tap, led by mayors who want to cut down on global warming.

Anderson is urging the U.S. Conference of Mayors to promote tap water as a way to limit greenhouse-gas emissions. In San Francisco, residents who sign an online pledge not to buy plastic water bottles get a free stainless-steel water container. Some cities, aware that companies filter and sell municipal tap water under exotic names (Coca-Cola’s Dasani, PepsiCo’s Aquafina), are looking to bottle it themselves and use the profits for recycling programs.

Most water brands are packaged in a plastic derived from crude oil, polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Those containers are then transported on diesel-burning trucks or shipped in from exotic destinations like Fiji, generating greenhouse gases. “It’s the most environmentally egregious way to distribute water,” says Jennifer Gitlitz of the Container Recycling Institute, which found that only 14 percent of single-serving PET water bottles were recycled nationwide in 2004.

Sales of bottled water have tripled in 2006 from a decade earlier. This problem is not getting any better unless one by one, we all try to make a difference. Luckily, the Pacific Northwest has some of the best water in the country. The Columbian newspaper recently reported that Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard replaced plastic water bottles at city council meetings with pitchers of tap water. I still use a Brita filter for taste of my tap water, but look for me at a wedding near you sporting my new red bottle of tap water as an ambassador for change.
